Actor Prep - Winter Break

Actor Preparation Over Winter Break

You may certainly work with the current draft, but when new scripts are published around 1/27, it will be important to do a few things...or nine.  :)

ONE
Read your play carefully and look closely at your dialogue.  What are the things you say that are particularly informative about your character...lines that give you an anchor - a strong foundation on which you can develop your full transformation.

TWO
What are the things other characters say about you?  How does their perception help inform your characterization?

THREE
What are aspects of the character that are very much like you?
What are aspects that are very much different?
Think about these things both psychologically and physically.

FOUR
Find a piece of music that helps you to transform into character.
Is this a song that would be the "soundtrack of their life"?
Is this a song they would simply love to listen to?
Is this a song that simply helps you find the "feel"?
All of the above?
All are valid.

FIVE
Find a particular gesture - something physical that helps you transform.  If you were to repeat this gesture over and over - for a minute or so...would it help you drop into character?

SIX
What is the secret your character holds that no one else knows? - not the other characters and not the audience.

SEVEN
If your character were an animal, what animal would they be?

EIGHT
If your character were an inanimate object, what object would they be?

NINE
What is your character's favorite season and why?

Please journal about these things...keep good notes...come into January rehearsals having done some solid preparation.

Due to an unforeseen actor conflict due to unique circumstances, we sadly must cancel today's rehearsal (Wed. 12/13) with Jeff Denight and LOST_FOR_WORDS.

Enjoy your afternoon off.  The rehearsal for 12/14 is still "on" as scheduled.

Technical Leads, Apprentices, and Show Support/Run Crew

Tech Lead/Apprentice Roles for HHTU

Please meet immediately after school on Wednesday, 1/3/2018 for a brief meeting to discuss schedules, responsibilities, and to collect contact information.

**A couple of notes about how decisions were made:

1)   With so many people applying, particularly for Costuming and Run Crew/Show Support, folks I didn’t know skill-wise were hard to place.  You are invited!: Be a part of our shows at any of our builds, whether lighting, costuming, or scenic…that way the designers and I can get to know your skill base.
2)   Seniors are, barring no other alternatives, generally ineligible for Apprentice positions, as Apprentices are learning the ropes to Lead in future productions.  Builds are always an available and appreciated option for folks to be involved and to learn new skills.

3)   Schedule conflicts over the teching/running process were a decider for a few positions…again – Come to the Builds.  We still need you!

In addition, there are a large number of actors to see.  In the event I feel I need an additional day of auditions, I will use Thursday 11/30 as a second day of callbacks.  Given both 11/30 and 12/1 are mandatory dates (per the signed packets), this should not impact anyone.  The goal is still to cast by end of the day.  But I will not rush a process that should be given utmost care. And I want to be able to properly respect your work and efforts.

LOST_FOR_WORDS... Evolution

As this affects how I will be looking at casting and how some things will be interpreted in the auditions today, I wanted to share the result of a terrific script development conversation I just had with playwright Jeff Denight.

They are very excited about how their script is evolving and wanted me to share the following with you:

During the development process, LOST_FOR_WORDS will evolve, resulting in the following:
JACKY and ALEX will be played by female actors.  SAM will be played by a male actor.  The character of SAM will also go through a journey of questioning his sexuality and how this impacts gender expectations.  The traumas around SAM and TALYOR will be elevated to be more in line with JACKY's journey.

YAY NEW PLAYS!!!
